Data points are used to define the connectivity details to the data systems. These data system could represent the source, target or the native processing platform.
The connectivity details depend on the type of system where data belongs. Like, for data in RDBMS, generally the data point would have details like hostname or ip, port, user credentials and the database/schema. For Restful systems, the connection details would include the endpoint and the authentication details.
Apart from providing the connection details, the data point also provides functionality to standardize the properties that need to be used when extracting from or loading data into the data system. These extract and load properties vary based on the type of the system for which the data point is being setup.
